What does 'Regenerative Fashion' Really Mean?

Regenerative fashion goes beyond sustainability, using farming methods that rebuild ecosystems, sequester carbon, and support healthier futures.

You’ve likely heard the word regenerative floating around in the world of fashion, but what does it actually mean and why does it matter?

In the context of clothing, regenerative refers to how raw materials — like cotton, wool, linen, and leather — are grown or raised. Just like the food we eat, natural fibers are farmed. And how those farms are managed makes all the difference.

At the heart of regenerative fashion is a farming philosophy called regenerative agriculture. A holistic approach that focuses on healing and restoring the soil. Unlike conventional farming, which strips the land of nutrients and relies heavily on synthetic chemicals, regenerative practices work with nature. They prioritize biodiversity, minimal disturbance, and most importantly: soil health.

Because here’s the thing... healthy soil does something incredible. It acts as a carbon sink. Through a process called carbon sequestration, regeneratively grown plants (like cotton) pull excess carbon from the atmosphere and store it underground, where it feeds microbes and strengthens ecosystems. That means the same cotton crop can actually help combat excess carbon... if it's grown regeneratively.

Given fashion’s massive carbon footprint, this is a big deal.

Some scientists believe that regenerative agriculture could reverse the climate crisis. And that’s why more and more brands are beginning to shift toward regeneratively grown fibers.

But here’s where it gets misunderstood:
Regenerative doesn’t always mean organic.

A material can be grown regeneratively but still be treated with toxic synthetic pesticides or herbicides.

If you know us here at COED, you know that doesn’t fly.

That’s why we use only Regenerative Organic Certified cotton—because non-toxicity is one of our core pillars. It’s not just about restoring the land; it’s about protecting your body, too.

We know all of this can feel overwhelming. But our goal at COED is to make it easier—to help you make an impact on the climate crisis through your closet, while looking great doing it.

Because when your clothing is designed to restore the planet, not harm it, you can feel good in every way.
