When building a compostable, traceable, and regenerative garment, every detail counts... especially the ones you don’t see.
Take sewing thread, for example. We assumed sourcing it would be simple. American-grown, American-spun, organic cotton sewing thread? Easy enough… right?
Turns out... it didn’t exist!
At least, not in the way we envisioned: 100% cotton thread, grown and spun in the U.S., using (at least!) organic practices. What we found instead were partial solutions... It was either cotton grown in the U.S. and spun in India, or the reverse. But nothing fully domestic. Nothing that met our standard.
Everyone we spoke to told us to let it go. And since sewing thread is less than 1% of a garment, brands aren’t even required to disclose what their thread is made of (!!) That means a garment labeled “100% organic cotton” might still be held together by polyester or poly-cotton thread... And poly unfortunately means plastic. It’s an almost invisible detail, but one that makes the entire piece non-biodegradable. (Unless you sit down and cut every seam out by hand!)
That just wasn't going to work for us.
So... we made our own! We had our cotton — Regenerative Organic Certified Pima — spun into sewing thread. The result? The only USA-grown, USA-spun, organic, regenerative Pima cotton sewing thread we know of.
And it's just as sturdy. The reason polyester exists in most thread is because it's stronger than cotton, so it adds strength. But Pima cotton, with its extra-long staple length, is naturally strong, giving our thread durability without compromise.
So yes, it’s just thread. But it means you can compost your COED garment as-is, no scissors needed. It means every inch of your clothing aligns with our seed-to-shirt-to-soil mission.
And for those of you who tune into fabric frequencies: even a small amount of synthetic fiber — like polyester thread — can collapse the energetic field of a garment. So if you care about what you’re wearing on an energetic level, start asking your favorite brands what their seams are made from.
We believe even the smallest details deserve integrity. That’s why at COED, we sweat the small stuff... so you don’t have to.
