If you’ve ever wondered whether you can compost your clothes—the answer is: you can. At least, if they’re made like ours are.
Most clothing today is filled with synthetic fibers, plastic threads, chemical dyes, and toxic finishes. Even garments labeled “100% cotton”... Even "100% organic cotton" often include polyester thread, synthetic tags, or plastic labels—making them impossible to safely return to the earth.
At COED, we build our garments differently. Every piece is made from 100% compostable materials. From the Regenerative Organic Certified Pima cotton fabric to our very own sewing thread, plant dyes, and even 100% organic cotton labels. No synthetics. No shortcuts.
That means: Once your COED garment has been worn, weathered, and loved, you can literally compost it (!!!)
We recommend cutting it into smaller pieces to speed up the process. Then, if you have a home compost bin, you can add the pieces just like you would food scraps or yard waste. If not, keep an eye out, because we’re working on a COED compost take-back program to help make the process even easier.
This is about more than a t-shirt. It’s about rethinking the end of a garment’s life. Most clothes are destined for landfills, where they’ll sit for hundreds of years. But ours? They return to the soil they once came from.
Because for us, it’s not enough to do less harm. We’re here to do things right—from seed to soil, and back again.
